The Conversation That Changes Everything

Hey Future Looper!
There’s this moment I’ll never forget.
I was sitting in a café in Norfolk, Virginia, with my little “Free Coaching” sign, wondering if anyone would actually stop by.
(Yes, this was after my glassblowing days, and no, I still don’t sell pendants!)
That’s when Sarah sat down.
“I don’t know why I’m even here,” she said. “But something made me stop.”
What happened next changed everything I thought I knew about transformation.

The Conversation That Wasn’t
Here’s what I didn’t do:
- Ask about her “pain points”
- Launch into my coaching spiel
- Try to prove my expertise
- Pull out any techniques
- Promise her results
- Lead the conversation
- Direct the insight
- Create the breakthrough
- Push for change
- Control the process
- Follow the energy
- Notice the patterns
- Allow the insight
- Hold the space
- Trust the process
- Safety – When you’re not pushing for change, people feel safe to explore.
- Space – Real insights need room to emerge naturally.
- Trust – In both the process and the person’s innate wisdom.
- Listen deeply (not just to the words)
- Follow their natural flow
- Notice the subtle shifts
- Hold the space for insight
- Trust what emerges
Instead, I simply said, “Tell me more about that something.”
And then… I waited.

The Magic of Space
The silence felt eternal (probably eight seconds, but who’s counting?).
Then something fascinating happened.
Sarah’s eyes shifted slightly to the left, her breathing changed, and she said something seemingly unrelated:
“You know, I had a bird when I was little…”
Most coaches would get confused. Many therapists would redirect. Consultants would pull things back on track.
But I had accidentally stumbled onto something important.
---
The Hidden Pattern
What Sarah was doing wasn’t random at all.
Her unconscious mind was offering up exactly what needed to be addressed—just not in the way most of us are trained to recognize.
That “random” story about her childhood bird?
It contained the exact metaphor she needed to understand her current situation.

The Art of Following
What most people get wrong about transformative conversations is thinking they need to:
Real transformation happens when you:
---
The Natural Flow
As Sarah talked about her bird—how it would never leave its cage even when the door was open—something shifted.
Her eyes widened slightly. Her posture softened. Her voice got quieter.
And then she said, “Oh…”
That single syllable contained more transformation than hours of traditional coaching could have achieved.
---
Why This Works
The power of this approach comes from three key elements:
---
The Framework
Want to create these kinds of conversations? Follow this basic framework:
Sound simple? That’s because it is.
Sound easy? That’s where most people get stuck.
---
Your Turn
Here’s a challenge:
In your next conversation—professional or personal—try this:
When someone tells you something, instead of planning your reply, simply say:
“Tell me more about that…”
Then wait.
Really wait.
See what emerges in that space.
---
What’s Next?
Next time we’ll dive deeper into handling what arises in these spaces—because once you start creating this openness, amazing things emerge.
See you in the loop!

(And yes, that urge you’re feeling to try this out immediately… that’s your unconscious mind recognizing something important! 😉)
